I am not a huge horror movie fan but I read your website with great interest. The few films I've actually watched at your recommendation, I do not regret.

I'm not sure I agree with you on the merits of 'torture porn'. Will have to keep thinking on that one.

Also one of your posts got me thinking on another one: the distinction between thriller and horror movies.

In thriller movies, the underlying goal is to suggest that the main character is in control of their fate. They may suffer adversity but at the end they usually overcome it. They may bare scars but they emerge victorious. This is empowering for the viewer.

In horror movies, the desired effect is to suggest that the main character is powerless. Even if they survive, they're usually broken and even in some cases better off dead. This is not empower for the viewer.

I think this, more than anything is the hard distinction between the genres, but take my intuitions with a grain of salt, I'm not an expert.Helmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00584102280299430293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-431609518471013077.post-56299264930446158232011-01-20T22:32:39.172-05:002011-01-20T22:32:39.172-05:00@Cosmo - I have this sneaking suspicion that there...@Cosmo - I have this sneaking suspicion that there's a lot of overlap between goregrind fans and the customer base for the filmmakers profiled here. It's all really obvious, gross and juvenile. On the other hand, I think about a group like Khanate, and their lyrics are actually unsettling. It's a tough thing to do well - the line in metal between affecting and silly is really, really thin.

@Helm - thanks for the kind words. Coming from you (and Cosmo), I'm honored. And yeah, I wondered where I'd heard Bill's name before and when I looked him up on IMDB, it mentioned the Grimoire in his entry. I've probably got a copy or two in my zine collection somewhere, I should check to see if his crucified girl fetish shows up there too. I bet it does. His interviews were hilarious.

And speaking of metal connections, the singer (I think) for Necrophagist plays a killer in at least one of the August Underground movies. His claim to fame is apparently having sex with the headless corpse of a baby. So, you know, subtle.

@Matt - thank you, I appreciate it. If you're not much for horror, I'd probably recommend Cthulhu, The Call of Cthulhu and Pontypool first. Also The Killing Room if blood doesn't bother you.

And as long as I'm replying to an entire Invisible Oranges contingent, I think I've said this to Cosmo before, but the galvanizing thought that got me to start writing this came to me after I'd read yet another poorly written, poorly reason horror movie review on some enthusiast website, at which point I said to myself "there needs to be an Invisible Oranges for horror movies."Cliff Evanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14601389977814866457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-431609518471013077.post-51881789256305906532011-01-19T06:03:25.971-05:002011-01-19T06:03:25.971-05:00i really like your thoughtful reviews which are mo...i really like your thoughtful reviews which are more like general musings about a film rather than suggesting whether we ought to see said film or not- just what i'm looking for! but, not being a horror fan (i came to this site from invisible oranges), i am yet to sample ANY of the films you've put up for consideration- i'm not sure i could handle them! but i'll keep coming back here because i get a kind of second hand thrill of wondering if and when i might be tempted by you and go ahead and take the plunge! one day...Matthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03055107716509010722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-431609518471013077.post-14225265369567625352011-01-19T05:07:23.903-05:002011-01-19T05:07:23.903-05:00Thank you for the write-up. Probably 99.9% of lyrical content about gore/violence/etc. is fictional and obviously so. Personally I would want that number to be 100%, but there is a certain frisson that comes from that undefined difference. That's why clowns like Varg Vikernes continue to attract far more notoriety than they deserve.Invisible Orangeshttp://invisibleoranges.comnoreply@blogger.com
